I found a nice little app called nav launcher. All it does is provide a shortcut to google navigation. When you open the app you're taken to a screen that allows you to either type in the address, use voice, use a location from your history, or a favorite location. Once you pick your destination, you click navigate and it runs google nav. I had been looking for a way to just have a shortcut to google nav without having to go through google maps menus, and this does the job quite nicely. Plus its a very small app too which I like, since it doesnt really need to do much. I think its worth checking out. Heres the QR code

You can create a shortcut to any destination by longpressing the screen and choosing shortcuts the choose maps and you can type in anything or leave it blank and then place it on one of your homepages.

I tried that but it doesnt appear to allow you to just leave it blank where it will launch nav on its own. And I dont want to have shortcuts for each individual place I may use nav for.

No problem. I also found that this app seems to be a more useful replacement for google maps address book, and its only 1/3 of the size (nav launch is only about 62kb)

Wow, thanks. This is exactly what I needed!

How the car dock does not include a favorites or history button is beyond me. Now to integrate POI...

I've been using Nav Launcher since I first got my Droid back in November. In fact, I'd long since forgotten it was a third party app since it's virtually the only way I ever access navigation. And when people complained about problems or complexities with Google maps and navigation I could never understand what they were talking about.

Just trying to spread the love! haha

I have definitely gotten some good use out of Nav Launcher (I even started my own thread way back when...)

Though I might be using it less because the Car Dock v2 app adds a shortcut you can add to your homescreen that takes you right to directions page in Maps, where you can than press the button the right next to the destination field and choose from starred locations and contacts, or just tap the destination field to pull up your history.

(To add the Car Dock v2 shortcut, long-press on a home screen, choose shortcuts, then scroll down and hit "Car Dock -- Google Navigation")

And with the technique in this this thread, you can rename your starred locations. (Though only using the web, so Nav Launcher is still better for quickly renaming a favorite.)
