Custom roms and wiping data

I'm used to custom roms and making backups and such from the OG Droid, but one thing I can't quite wrap my head around is the common partition on the Nexus for /data and /mnt/sdcard. When wiping the data partition in CWM Recovery does it zap everything that is stored in /mnt/sdcard as well since they seem to 'share' a data partition (though one /data is ext4 and the sdcard is fuse), or does whatever magic that keeps them separate protect the 'sdcard' contents as well? I'm still running stock but sick of waiting on Verizon to push out 4.03 so want to try a custom rom+kernel, but I don't feel like having to copy the 10G of data I have in the sdcard portion back and forth from my PC every time I zap the data partition if that also zaps the sdcard contents.
