Default Messaging App - Quick Question

just a quick question if anyone has any experience with the native texting app...in other words the default texting application....

i've had handcent installed for a while and then uninstalled it. going back to the native messaging app i realized that there is no text counter. can i turn it on in the native texting app? i don't want the messages to go over the limit and then get cut off.

How would you turn on something that isn't there?

actually, the counter appears when these are 10/under characters remaining before it spills over to the 2nd or followup messages.
