Did a hard reset and bookmarks still intact??

So I just did a hard reset hoping to resolve a few unresolved issues. I noticed when I went into my browser that all of my bookmarks were still there. How exactly is this possible??? Were they backed up to my google account or somewhere on the sd card???

When you first set up your phone, there is an option to backup bookmarks, etc to your google acct

Well that is too cool. I didn't even realize bookmarks were backed up.
