Differences in Droid 1 & Droid 2 Root

I've heard lots of stories about the how rooting the Droid 2 is different from the Droid 1 due to a locked bootloader... I've gathered that this is because you can't use programs like nandroid? This was vital to me in my rooting of the D1 since I could install and test new roms on the fly (like at work where i can't connect to my PC to do any fixes) Anyway, can anyone clarify on this for me, cause I am on the fence about rooting, but the lack of nandroid makes me hesitant...

Rooting doesn't necessarily mean ROMs...
But to answer your question, if you get the Droid 2/X Bootstrapper app, you can flash Clockworkmod Recovery and get access to make and restore Nandroid backups, it's just slightly trickier to get into recovery (I have to do a battery pull when it gets to the red eye, or do "Reboot into recovery" from the Bootstrapper.
So, fear not, you can still have the backups... Altho I have not had to restore from an image yet, so I'm not sure if it's exactly like on the OG Droid.
