Disabling email notification

Hi All
I get notifications from the email app and would like to disable them. When I long press the notification it takes me to the app info but the show notifications is grayed out so I cant uncheck it. I use gmail for my emails and dont need notifications in my task bar. How can I get rid of the notifications from the "email icon".
