Does Alerts Volume and Ringer Volume have to be the same?

For example I need to be able to hear the phone ring, but I don't necessarily need to know when an email comes in when I'm in my office.

I use the Audio Manager widget and i set the alerts low and the ringer high, but when either of two are received by the phone the volume levels reset so they're both the same.

My tones are different volumes, but I set them using timmeriffic.

Go to Sounds and Display in Settings, click on Ringer Volume, then uncheck the box that links ringer and notification volume together.
