Does Gmail provide new email notification?

I love my new Droid, and receive Facebook email notifications in the title bar at the top of the home screen, but no notification of new Gmail. Is there a widget or app that lets me know how many new emails I have received from Gmail? Thanks so much in advance!

Open the Gmail application >> Menu >>Settings

Under "Notification Settings," make sure that "Email Notifications" is checked. Enabling this will give you notifications in the status bar when email arrives.

I had notifications from Gmail from the get go. I thought that would be the default.
