I leave Wi-Fi on all the time and it does make a difference but nothing like leaving the data network on all the time. Reception will make the difference more or less noticeable. The worse your reception, the bigger the difference in battery life of data network vs Wi-Fi.
I can set my Wi-Fi so it sleeps with the phone but I leave it on all the time and it makes about a 10% difference each day.
I'd suggest give it a try and see if you can live with the difference in battery life.

A Rezound phone was used for this Tapatalk post
I did this a few nights in a row compared to all radios off. I left wifi and mobile data on and lost about 7 or 8% overnight. Both radios off I lose about 4 or 5%. So yes it does drain a bit more as you're leaving a radio on, but it shouldn't make a significant difference.
If at any point your phone needs to use the internet via wifi or data, wifi certainly takes less battery.
If WiFi is on and not connected to a hot spot or network then yes it will KILL the battery due to constant searching and refreshing on the list of close by networks.
