Droid 2 Digitizer Question

Alright so the digitizer on my droid 2 is severely cracked and causing a lot of misclicks on the phone. I know I can pick up a replacement, but I dont feel like doing all the work to replace the part and spending the money since my upgrade is on 12/6/11. So my question is could I simply pulled the entire digitizer out and cut the ribbon connector so the the touch screen on the phone would be disabled? Im pretty sure everything can be accessed through the hardware keyboard and I havent been able to find any other way of disabling the touch input on the phone. Thanks for the help guys! Any suggestions would be great

I don't know if the 4 soft keys operate via the digitizer or not but you might need those. How are you gonna pull your blind down to clear notifications?
