I will be upgrading soon, and thought about letting my son use the droid on our wi-fi and as a media player.

Is this possible?

Absolutely, put it in airplane mode, turn on wifi and connect! You can get around using your Gmail account for apps if you just side load your apps from the sdcard.

All rooted, of course.

I do this myself in my work truck. Serves as my media player and GPS.

I loaded a bunch of games for my 7yr old daughter on my old Droid X.

Make sure you keep a cover on the device as kids like to drop things. I know...my Droid 1 now has a cracked screen thanks to my son's butterfingers. :icon_evil:

i thought airplane mode would also block wifi, was i wrong?

WiFi still works in airplane mode. I have my Droid OG in a desk charger next to the bed, in landscape as my alarm clock. It has access to the Play Store (market), Google Music, etc. and it will stream whatever other site I want.

If it is on when you turn on airplane mode, it will turn off but you can turn it on afterwards!

Like the others said...

Turn on airplane, then turn on WiFi.
