With a semi-respectable number of post so far, I feel I'm qualified for a venting post. I'm sure others have complained about this before but let me just proclaim my frustration for the Droid's inability to play just about any video file!!

If we're using our common sense then we know most videos you download at random will more than likely be .mpg, .avi, .wmv, etc... So why in the hell didn't they add support for these types of files? I wish I could download and install the K-Lite codec pack on this thing. Am I the only one who finds this phone rather useless as a media device when I have to run nearly every single video file through a converter? Suppose I can't place all the blame on the Droid, as I'm sure the other Android devices are lacking in the area as well.

This is especially frustrating when downloading porn, as if I weren't already a little frustrated to begin with lol ;)

Its not just the Droid. Just about any phone/video-capable device has the same issue, unless you get a device thats specifically build for it, such as Archos. Many current devices, such as the iPhone/iPod, Blackberry have hardware decoding of certain video formats (H264 mainly) which makes it possible to use lower-speed processors, thus enhancing battery life. While there is a video player for Android that can play divx files (some weird name) it does not use hardware decoding, thus your 1400MB (2part) XVID DVD would stutter during playback, and will max out the processor continuously, reducing your battery life to only a 4th of what it has with a hardware-decoded format.

Here's a good one for you:

I went to a concert, recorded tons of video with my Droid.
I get home and try to play them on the phone, they play for a few seconds, and then the phone pops up a message telling me "This video cannot be played." All the while still playing the video BEHIND the message.

HD2 ( that's WM6.5 ) can play almost any format , didn't had a problem at all playing DivX , AVI , MPEG , WAV etc.

handbrake?

Nah I use ImTOO Converter Ultimate. Has a ton of different converting options but it's not free unless you... *ahem* "borrow it" indefinitely like myself. Just seems pointless to even bother downloading videos onto a phone if you have to transfer it to the computer, convert it to an .mkv/mp4, then transfer it back.

I need to justify my need for unlimited data usage!! lol

there is a little know video player for droid called wuzhenhua that is a free download. it seems to play everything. just finished watching last weeks episode of v in an xvid on it.
