Droid emotacon :-)

So I just got a droid x which is a huge upgrade over my old tmobile G1. But there are a few things that the X doesn't do and I was wondering if it was just me not finding the right settings or what. But I noticed that the X doesn't keep a text message count like the G1. And the little droid emoticons like the smiley face etc, dont come up as the little green droid guy. Is there a setting or something that im missing or something I can download from the market?

If the phone at the other end supports the emoticon the will see it.
The icon doesn't show in Blur.
