Droid sometimes discharges while plugged in

I have a rooted Motorola droid running Android 2.1 In the past couple of days, I've noticed that sometimes, while my Droid is plugged in (via USB or adapter - it doesn't seem to matter), the charge drops to 50-60% from 100% and then the Droid begins charging again.

I've also noticed that invariably, one of my tethering apps (proxoid or barnacle wifi tether) is using a lot of CPU at that time and the phone is feels pretty hot. I browsed around the forums and it seems like other people have experienced similar issues.

I should note that this started happening a couple of days ago. Before that, I had been using tethering apps merrily for the past 1.5 months without any problems.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it because the charging port is not powerful enough to support both running the CPU at 60-80% and charging or atleast sustaining the battery at the same time or is it a software bug or something more serious? Thanks
