DROID standby button problem

Recently I've been having a problem with my droid and it's inability to exit standy mode when i hit the standby button. When i push the button, the keys at the bottom light up but the screen doesn't. After a few hits, the screen will respond immediately and turn on. But this is becoming a bit of a nuissance. Has anybody had a problem like this and found a fix?

I've tried rebooting the phone a few times, which didn't solve anything. I really don't want to have to try the factory reset. Thanks for the welcome.
