How do I go about getting a custom recovery on my droid x? And what is this bootstrapper I keep hearing about.

Sent from my DROIDX using DroidForums App

In order to make a back up of your phone, first you need to root with z4 root. Then you can install bootstrap from the market. It's an application that helps you make backups of everything on your phone.

Droid X. Rooted with Z4root and underclocked to save battery life.

Ok got that now do I use droid x bootstrapper and is that all I have to do? I wont have to push the custtom recovery though adb or anything like that?

to answer your ? yes thats all you need to do

But I would read up on other things so you can either run custom roms or just theme the stock rom after you root.

So much more you can add and take away.

If your into roms for the DroidX I'd say darkslide 4.2 is the best rom i've tried yet on all my phones. Its very fast with all my apps loaded

Its a real lot of work

I can help but its best to try to find all that you like then gather it up take note where it was installed or how its to be installed. Some of the d/l's come as update.zips but for the d1 only. those you have to open and move the apk yourself. I use root explorer to do this.

If it was my work Id try to make an theme of it. I didnt change any system settings except the png's for the settings widget. that I can share. but say facebook, twitter, pandora, googlevoice and other's can be found the inverted section under the droid1, but these apk's are interchangable when signed correctly they are easily installed just clicking on them. the one's like I do you have to manually paste them in either system/app or data/app.
Wish I could explain things better. gather things up then pm me if you have questions I'll get u started doing what I o then you can do anything just since you learning make alotof backups.

Ok here goes to install this you must have root explorer. and be rooted of course :)
download my edited apk and rename by removing the .zip from the end. once its on your sdcard in case you download via pc like I usually do. long press on the setttings.apk you just d/l'd and choose copy. Now back up from sdcard so you can go into system/app once in system app dont paste. on top right click the rw/ro button now scroll down to find the current settings.apk once you find it long press on it choose rename now just delete the last letter then hit enter the file will loose its icon which is what we want. now you can choose paste on the botton left of rootexplorer. Ok now long press on the file and choose permissions and set them to 6.4.4 i'll post a pic for those that dont know what that means.
now all thats left is to reboot then when phone boots up readd the widget to your homescreen. if it doesnt' work for you for some reason or other you can go rename the old one back. This method has worked for me on all phones.

I know this is a different app but thats waht 6.4.4 permisions looks like.

This is the same method I used to replaced googlevoice. As for pandora twitter and facebook the inverted one's by thebowers in his section you can just click install in any file explorer so I recommend his for taht part

so i can just flash a stock froyo rom and theme it? or is there any flashing involved? i guess what im trying to say is do i need a custom recovery to do the themes?

depends

Ive never rooted and not changed the recovery, even though I prefer to edit and change things out with rootexplorer.

many find it easy to use update.zips which do require updated recovery

its simple on the X. Go to market and purchase bootstrap and your done.

i have been reading and the say bootstrapper does not replace the recovery it just hijacks some of the start up stuff to let u use the recovery. i am manly asking because i never do anything to my phone with out having a way to get back to stock. in case i need to send my phone back to Verizon or have warranty work done to it.
