droid x gmail/email problem

Hey guys, whenever I open up my gmail widget, it opens briefly then shoots me back to.the homescreen??so I can't access my email unless its through the browser....which is annoying
any suggestions

Open up the gmail app itself, forget about any type of email widget.

My Gmail App does not always auto-receive new messages. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas? It is not being killed by a task killer and I have good 3g signal.
