Droid2 leaky data

I have D2G and will be travelling to Canada next week. I was wondering how to best handle data usage since I will no longer be on an unlimited plan. I'd like to check my email only when necessary.

I tried turning off background data. However according to an app I downloaded called Traffic Stats the following apps have used data in the last 10mins or so.

Dialer/DialierStorage/hiddenemu/simtoolkit/..... a whole bunch of other services Sent 3kb Received 4kb

Certificate Manager / Content Provider / AtCommandService/3g mobile hotspot... a whole bunch of other services Sent 2kb Receieved 1kb

usb sent 0B receivedd 1kb.

No idea how accurate this tool is but it's worrysome that my phone is using data when I clearly don't want it to.

My current plan is to turn data roaming off when I don't plan to send data. Hope that works

I went to Canada not to long ago and I just turned data completely off by using the data off when roaming option. Then I would check my email whenever I had a wifi connection.

Thats what I plan to do for the most part, but its kinda wierd that my dialer uses an internet connection.

Beware - using WiFi while roaming

If you subscribe to a global data plan and use WiFi when you are roaming, then you have to turn off the data roaming when you are using WiFi or you will get charged for the WiFi data. There seems to be no way to set priority for networks (i.e. use WiFi when available over data)

Unfortunately, turning off global data roaming requires going into settings, data manager and turning it off, which isn't convenient. This seems to me to be a pretty basic function that I had in my previous HTC global smartphone...

I will say that so far, I've found Verizon's global data roaming plans to be reasonably priced and work well. just a few dollars a day, which when you are travelling overseas, isn't much.

Verizon quietly dropped its very attractive international data plan in January (the 11th I believe). The international rates are now among the worst especially outside of North America/Carribean/Europe.

Too true! Almost makes the global feature useless. Very unhappy with verizon for this.

Well, not useless, but only usable unlocked with local SIMs! Actually, I never used the global plan while it existed because it was way too expensive for voice calls compared to local SIMs, so not a big change for me, but obviously very annoying for many, especially those who use data in multiple countries and now have to worry about obtaining and swapping the necessary SIMs.
