Dumb Question from a Druid-Newbie about Rooting ??

I'm a LOOONG-term BBerry user who just switched over to Droids within the last 2 months. Hubby got the X, but it's way too big for my little hands to comfortably type and I'm stuck on my physical keyboard, so I got the Droid 2 - hated it - so I got the Samsung Fascinate - it's ok, but I HATE the touch keyboard and seriously miss the physical keyboard from my BB, but I like the Droid OS and apps, so I'm anxiously waiting for my PRO to be delivered to my door any minute!! (Yes, literally.... I'm sitting at home with my ear peeled for the FedEx man right now!! *LOL*)

Anyway...... I keep reading about rooting phones and wondered what the heck that's all about? Why do you root your phone? What purpose does that serve? I'm anxious to learn learn learn.

Rooting a Droid is pretty much the same as jail breaking an iPhone (if you know what I'm talking about). I've never done either because I don't have either (like you I'm waiting for my Pro, which will be my first Droid, to be delivered lol). I also was wondering about what that meant when I joined this sight so I just did a search on Youtube for rooting Droids which explained everything.
