Duplicate Emails

Hi everyone, new guy here. Everytime I receive an email to my gmail account it shows up in the notification bar twice, one for gmail (the icon is a letter with a "M" on it )and one for the regular email (the icon is a letter with a "@" symbol on it). Its annoying because they are the same email so I have to clear each one.

Is there anyway to disable the non gmail one without restoring the phone to original settings?

I am using a POP3 account on my Droid and I will read the email and then delete it and then a few hours, days or even a month it will come back.

How can I fix this problem so that I don't keep getting the same messages.
