Durability of Droid 3

I've had a Droid 1 since February of '10 and am just about due for an upgrade. I like the Droid but the following items wore out on the phone far too early even though I've babied the phone

-Headphone jack
-USB jack
-Power button

Are these 3 parts more durable on the D3? I'm considering this phone but won't buy it if it will wear out quickly. VZW only does 2 year contracts now, so it is a concern.

If you opened your account before Verizon switched to only two-year contracts, you should be ok. I was still a few months away from my two year mark and they still let me upgrade.

As for the durability of the Droid3, the power button is stiffer, so it should last quite a bit longer. Unfortunately, input/output ports are the achilles heal of any electronic device just due to the constant movement of the cable being plugged in and out of the port. However, they are recessed just behind the outer shell of the phone, as opposed to flush with it as on the D1, so that should help give them a little extra durability.

I've had mine for almost 2 weeks now, its a very solid phone. I run it without a case and don't baby it. Haven't has a problem yet. It feels very durable and all of the parts look like they'll last. I'm getting a full coverage invisible shield skin, since I don't feel the need for a case. Just my opinion though since the screen is completely exposed.

Thanks, sounds like it's worth getting the D3 next week. My area is not getting LTE for a while, so I want a great 3G phone. This seems to fit the bill. The GSM capability puts it over the X2, and the CPU is better than the Inc 2.

I have dropped my Droid 3 onto wood flooring on a number of occasions now and there are no scratches on this phone.

I love Motorola durability.

Is the D3 an upgrade from the DX? Found out today 4g wont be in my area for awhile. Or may be I should wait it out. I would like a faster processor for 3g in the mean time. Any thoughts?

I don't understand what you mean by upgrade. Do you mean as in from the same line? Because the droid x and x2 are different from the droid 1, 2, and 3. Its a lot different and id personally say better as well.

I came from the original droid so tell me what's better about the droid 3 in comparison to the droid x other than speed and a physical keyboard? What stands out for u?

  • The screen. In direct, bright sunlight I can still easily see and use my phone. The X would work but it was difficult to see in direct sunlight.
  • The size. I like the screen size of the X but the overall phone was very small...thin. I didn't really feel comfortable with the X until I got a Gorilla Battery. This stock size of the D3 is perfect to me.
  • Front-facing camera. I know it's really just a novelty at this point but I can see real functionality coming soon. Already my work phones (VoIP) support video calls and they have an Android app as well. I can see the addition of support for the front facing camera soon.
That's my $0.02.

The Droid 3 is a DX2 with a keyboard. Its up to you if you feel that is an upgrade.

Couldn't disagree with this more. The D3 outperforms the DX2 by a lot. If anything the D3 is a Bionic with a physical keyboard and no 4g. I have seen no difference in performance between a Bionic and D3 despite the increased ram in the Bionic.

I just dropped my phone coming out the back of a friends minivan onto the pavement. Save for a relatively small scratch on the corner and quite the scare, no harm done. Motorola phones are durable as hell. I won't be throwing it around anywhere though. That's just asking for it.

That's what I thought :-)
