Early Tests on Android L Suggest Impressive Battery Life Improvements

It looks like when Google claimed the new Android L would have greatly improved battery life, they weren't just blowing PR smoke. According to folks at ArsTechnica who have been playing with the current build, tests show that Android L's Project Volta is very effective at improving battery efficiency.

Here's a quote with a few more details,

Thirty-six percent more battery life. Installing the L preview on our Nexus 5 gave us two extra hours of runtime. These tests were done on a beat up, daily-driver phone, so the final numbers aren't necessarily indicative of what the L preview could achieve on a new device. It's the difference that matters.

Android L also has a "battery saver" feature that lowers the device performance and cuts the background data and screen brightness when the device hits 15-percent battery, but we disabled this feature for our tests. We like to have our devices at full power, and we don't want a hyper-aggressive phone-crippling feature messing with our results. Presumably, you could gain even more runtime by turning the battery saver on. This test is more about the general under-the-hood improvements that are running all the time.

The report goes on to explain that they are testing with a developer preview, so it could get even better in the final version. With the amazing new aesthetics and these big battery performance improvements, we can't wait to get our hands on the new version of Android!

Why come out with a new line of Android? Why not just do all the re-work and then call it 5.0?

I think its because its what they have been doing since day one. Might be a superstitious thing or something. Or if you pay attention to things Google does, this is part of their overall make up.

Like having the Pi number as part of some thing they did before. Or some other significant mathematical thing as part of a bid or something.

Its who Google is.

Because the isheep would then say theirs is better because they're running 7.1.2 and getting ready to push to 8.0? If someone has a link confirming L will be 5.0 for sure and not 4.5 I'd appreciate seeing it. Most rumours at first said Kit Kat was going to be 5.0, not 4.4
