I love my droid but am looking for some direction on email.

i coming from a blackberry and used outlook and now have switched to primarily a gmail account. I want to know if i can erase emails from only phone and not from the web based gmail as well? I am betting that since it is internet based i am stuck with this using the preloaded gmail app.

is there another email app available so that i can view on my phone my gmails and erase on phone but NOT have it erased on the web based gmail as well? I like to keep my phone inbox clean but want the ability to permanently delete only on my laptop.

thank you in advance for your help.

I had the same issue. Really miss the option when I delete. What I discovered is that when you open your gmail folder you can hit the bar button (similar to bb button) this will bring up "labels" check the mail you want to save on your computer and hit labels. File the mail in the proper folder and hit archive. This will save the emails in the proper file and remove them from your inbox on the phone. This is as close as I have figured to the old option we used on our bb's.

That's neither here nor there. You can always set up gmail as a POP account but obviously not in the gmail app. Consider all the pros/cons though of switching to POP.

A different email app may also allow you to do this. I can't speak to this as I've never wanted to do so.

I use K-9 mail with my email (non-gmail) account.

I use 3 settings to accomplish what you mention.

1. Sync server deletions: "Remove messages when deleted on server" Turn this on

2. When I delete a message: "Mark as read on server"

3. Expunge delete message: "Immediately"

This combination allows me to view messages on my phone, respond if I want, and then when on my laptop, I can archive, delete, respond, etc.

One other tip: I have it set up to automatically copy all outgoing emails to my same email address. That way I have a copy of all sent messages on my laptop AND it serves as confirmation the email went through.

If you've ever found an important email sitting in your outbox due to some connection issues, you'll understand why ;)

BTW, I use POP3 on my laptop and IMAP on my Droid for the same account. That way my email is pushed to my Droid immediately without polling.

K-9 is on the marketplace. It's free.

Hope this helps.
