Eris capable of enhanced messaging?

A friend of mine got an Eris on my recommendation. She asked about a problem she has texting where if someone texts her from a standard (non-smart) messaging phone with the flower icon, or heart, it puts <pic> in place. A follow-up message comes saying multimedia images were removed from a previous message.

The sender gets a message saying: "Destination can't receive enhanced messages."

Anyone know a fix?

I believe she is using the standard messaging app. Will one of the other messaging apps fix this?

I have a Droid, and when I text my wife on her Eris even with just plain text if it's over 160 characters we get the error message about enhanced messaging not supported. It then breaks the message into two separate texts just like if it was going to a non-VZW user. Weird.
