Eris: International Wifi with Radio Off?

I am going to South America soon and I would like to be able to use my Eris to access the free wifi in the hotels, but dont want to get charged by verizon every 2 seconds when the data plan goes to check for emails/updates. I know that airplane mode allows you to turn off all radios, including wifi. Does anyone know how to turn off the "Verizon" radio while still leaving on the wifi, so that I can access the internet and not get charged by verizon for data checks?

You should be able to turn on wifi with Airplane mode on.....
