I am trying to set up some shortcuts for my wife on her Eris. When I create the shortcuts, they all look the same, no matter what number is attached to them (mobile, work, home). Are they supposed to look like this? Should I have different contacts for each type of number (like *Name* Mobile, or *Name* home, or *Name* work, etc.)?
As an aside, when I created shortcuts like this on my Moto Droid, they had small letters in the corner indicating the type of number that was associated with it (small m for mobile number, small h, etc.).

I've only had my phone for two days, and i was trying to do the same thing. Here is what I have discovered. I hope one of these options work for you.

From the home page click on the + and then choose shortcut/person. pick your contact and then on the next screen choose what you want the default action to be (email, sms, mobile, etc) from that particular shortcut. The shortcut will say "Call Fred" (for home, work or cell) or "Send to Fred" (for sms and email). It doesn't distinguish any farther than that, but if you have only have a definite preference this will work.

The HTC Widget called People might work for you. You set up a list of Favorite people, and once again it asks you what your default action for that person is. The nice thing here is that the thumbnail for each contact has a small icon telling you what the action will be for that person. However, you can only set up one shortcut for each contact in the widget.

Finally, there is an widget call "Starred" +/shortcut/live folder/starred that draws from the same list of favorites as the HTC widget above. In Starred, you click on the person you want, then it asks you which action you want to take. The only way that I have found to add people to your "starred" list is to add them via the HTC Widget "People," but there must be an easier way.

Hope this helps.

Anycut

There's a great app called Anycut that does exactly what you want in a couple of quick steps and it's free. If you follow the prompts it will put a widget on your screen with the person's name and a small "h" for home, "m" for mobile, etc. The icon is also distinctive for call (phone), text (bubble) etc. I just downloaded it this past weekend and I love it.
