i'm trying to set up the widget for social networking>facebook. however, i keep getting an error message saying "internal server error occurred. please try again"
anyone know how to resolve this?
i can still access my account through the browser site, but since i'm new to Droidx i thought it would be nice to have the widget.
thanks!

That's strange.
My first suggestion would be trying going into the main settings menu of the phone, then going into Accounts & Sync, and deleting the facebook entry, then trying logging in again and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall the app. Then reboot your phone. Make sure you have decent cellular coverage, and that there either 3g or wifi showing beside that. You are talking about "facebook for android" not motorola's social networking app, right?

I believe she is talking about the moto app. I am getting the same error. Without signing in to that app, you cannot link facebook apps to your address book contacts.

I got the error message when i clicked on a contact, choice add social network. it took me to the setup account screen where i tried to log in to the moto FB app. After trying to log in it says "Error An internal server error occurred. Please try again."

Curiously, if I enter an incorrect password, it tells me my log in information is incorrect.

Sounds like conflict to me.

Go to the app in your phone settings and delete data/clear cache. Reboot, then try again

just for clarification, this problem happened before and after i installed the facebook android app

I have the same issue

I am having this same issue, and from what I can tell it is specifically related to the Facebook account. I am getting the "Internal Error" message any time I try to register it under the "Accounts" section on the Droid X. My fiance, who received her phone at the same time, had no issue registering her account on her phone. Additionally, when she tried to register my account on her phone, she got the same Internal Error message.

So whatever the issue is it appears to be related to the actual Facebook account, and not to the specific phone. I suspect if I had 100 Droid X's it would give this error on each one. Why it doesn't like my account is something I would like to know the answer to...

Same issue for me. Any idea how we can get someone official to look at this? I imagine there must be a lot more people with this problem. Not essential for the phone to be cool, but pretty annoying.

Any Help?

I suspect both Verizon and Facebook would pin this issue on Motorola (probably rightly so). My fear is that each company would play the blame game and no one would own up to the problem. Here's to hoping Motorola steps up as this problem becomes more widespread (as it must be?)

The only additional thought I had was that this might somehow be related to having my Facebook account previously attached to another mobile device (such as an iPod touch?). That is the only difference I could pin between my fiance's Facebook account (which sync'd fine with her Droid X) and mine...but it is just a guess. This can't be the only explanation, however, since a huge percentage of Droid X users must have had their FB account attached to a mobile device at some point in the past.

I'm just adding more questions than answers, but I'm hoping if we keep this thread live more people will come across it. As was stated earlier, this is not crucial for the operation of the phone, but you do miss out on the notification, contact sync, and universal messaging functions when you can't register your FB account with the phone.

Are the resident experts on this forum who might have some insight into this issue? Its extremely simple to reproduce:

1) Turn on Droid X for the first time (even after a factory reset)
2) Register Gmail
3) Try to register FB account, message reads "Internal Server Error, please try again."

Things I've learned so far:
It is not related to a defect in a particular phone.
It appears to be related to your particular Facebook account (I could register a different account just fine)
As far as I can tell, there are no settings in your particular Facebook account that would be causing this conflict.
It is not related to the Facebook for Android application, but rather the default Motorola (Motoblur?) Facebook platform.
The problem persists after a factory reset.

As a reply to people suggesting a wipe of the cache or to delete/reinstall the application: I do not believe this is possible (please correct me if I'm wrong). The Moto FB app is native to the Android software (on the Droid X at least!), and you don't have the option to do either of those things.

We need help! Anyone?

Try going into your settings>applications>manage applications and hitting your menu key on the bottom of the phone. Change your filter to display all, and see if that displays moto-blur. If it does, then try clearing defaults, wiping cache, force stopping, whatever is available; then retry setting it up. Also, in your main system menu, scroll down to accounts and sync then try to add your facebook account that way.

Since this is a relatively new problem, its tough to nail down exactly what is causing it. Have you tried downloading facebook for android from the market, and adding your account that way.

By the way, you make excellent posts. Too often you have to drag this information out of people; your making this easy...even though the problem is relatively hard.

I was having same problem but then did a reset to defaults. I loaded my Facebook account before my Google account and it worked! Now I need to figure out why the pictures of my friends aren't loading. Oh, and now to re-download all of my apps!!

My wifes Droid X is having similar issues. And I have tried to see if its a social widget, the Facebook for Android, or being logged in or not on the browser version of FB. About every hour but sometimes sooner, she get an alert orange triangle that says Facebook authentication required. And has to log in on the FB for Android App.

I have noticed the Moto accounts page is not as easy to use as the Incredible which I have. If anyone figures this out, it would cool if you post the answer.

Internal Server Error Workaround ?

I just got my Droid X this afternoon and the 1st application I tried had a bug - hope this isn't a pattern.

I got the Internal Server Error message when trying to set up Facebook. Tried all the things listed here with no luck.

However, when i tried to log on using a bad password, I got an Invalid Password message. Then, I logged in again with the correct one and everything WORKED!

So far the problem seemed to be fixed by deleting android for blackberry app from the actual Facebook website. We will update later.

Solution Found!

Hello Droid X Friends-

If you've read this thread, you know there are quite a few people who were having the "Internal Server Error" message when they tried to sync their Facebook accounts with their Droid X. I went through a series of tests on my phone (including 3 factory resets) to try and determine the source of the problem. Many internet searches turned up cases where the problem simply "went away" after a short time...I was not so lucky.

I tried to locate the currently running Motoblur applications to clear the cache information or to kill the currently running apps, but nothing in the "unfiltered" list of applications resembled a social networking app.

As I mentioned earlier, through testing with my fiance's phone and her account, I believed the problem had to do with the Facebook account itself, not the phone and not the application on the phone. I was correct!

If you're like me, you disabled every possible thing in the privacy settings of your Facebook account. As it turns out, this prevents Facebook from sharing information with 3rd party apps, and as a result, you get the "Internal Sever Error" when you try to fix it. The solution takes about 30 seconds and is extremely simple.

On Facebook:
Go to Account->Privacy

Under Applications and Websites click 'Edit your settings'

Click 'Turn on' all platform applications

I don't know the wider security implication of opening the privacy settings up on your account...seems a lot like opening up your fly to the world. But it fixed the problem I was having with Facebook immediately. I hope this post saves some new Droid X users dozens of hours of troubleshooting!
