Facebook Event

I'm going to make a prediction about Facebook's mobile event tomorrow. I'm probably wrong, but I have reason to believe that Facebook is going to announce some type of facebook chat feature that allows you to voice chat/call people that are online on fb. As long as they have the proper hardware of course.

My ONLY reason I think it's a calling thing is because in their invitation picture, it looks like the two people in the middle are using the old tin cans and string trick to talk to eachother from far away. Look:

What is Facebook about to unveil? | Android Central

I'm guessing it has something to do with calling people, voice chatting, etc. We'll see tomorrow. Whatever it is, I hope it is compatible with my Droid 2.

Haha. I had the same thought because of the cans and simply because they shot down the facebook phone rumor. Then again, that could have been for this announcement. I assume voice and video are a logical next step for facebook though.

Honestly, I'd be satisfied if they just fixed facebook chat in general. It's riddled with problems, friends frequently sign offline, when they're in fact online. It just switches randomly between on and offline. Then there's the stupid error message "unknown error has occurred" and it won't send your message. I don't understand how facebook struggles to make a functional chat system. It's defective most of the time.

I'm also hopeful that they'll release an update for their Android app that includes fb chat, along with voice calling straight from the chat.

I think it has something to do with how they've tried to integrate XMPP with their own chat setup. It works, but not perfectly. Now that I think about it. Their chat system is such a throw together that a voice or video upgrade seems asinine without implementing an entirely new protocol. Maybe they're announcing new privacy features...hehe.

How do you know so much about facebook chat?

Had a bunch of trouble getting it to work with bitlbee, the IM client I use on my desktop, and through all the research learned a bunch. In the end the solution was that I was stupid, but I learned a lot about XMPP in the end so I guess it was worth it.

I don't now if anybody watched the conference, but it's my personal opinion that Facebook had an extremely boring conference. Nothing noteworthy came up, ya they released a facebook app update but it had a bunch of minor features that I will most likely never use (no offense to the people that do/will use them).

Single sign on was their biggest thing apparently, along with the location APIs.

I was really expecting something bigger than this, it was a huge disappointment to me.

I'd just be happy with an facebook app that actually worked.

Did you get the update?

I did. I actually got excited for a second, but then I rememberd every other update that never made it any better. Since I just downloaded it today, I really can't say if it improved anything or not yet, but no expecting much.

It added groups, places, and bug fixes. Exciting, right?

I was hoping for something a little bigger too but the fact that the facebook app no longer navigates me to the web for every little thing is enough for me.

Do messages display properly for anyone else? When I open up a thread that has a decent amount of replies (like...15+?) it will only show like...the 8th reply from the thread, regardless of how many new replies after that.

I'm hoping I explained it well enough for people to understand?

This is the most frustrating bug with the facebook app, btw this happens on BOTH android and ipod touch.

Anyone else have this issue?

Yeah, I would prefer getting notifications to threads I was involved in, and.....a crazy concept...but maybe getting notification on time too, and possibly actually having the app update al my threads when i open it. Oh, and not sending me to the mobile site when I want to reply to a notification.

I wanted them to fix the message thread bug, and add facebook chat.
