Facebook Status Updates in Contacts List

I just noticed that the most recent FB status for each of friends appears on my contacts list (People). I have no use for this. I wonder how much battery and data it wastes. Anybody know of a way to turn it off? I'd like to still sync my FB friends and their pictures on my contacts list if possible. I just don't want their status updates.
