File storage question

Is all data that the user creates stored on the SD card, or (like on my BB) do we have the choice to store data such as picts,vids,notes.... in the internal memory?

From what I gather apps default to internal memory and data goes to sd card. I think with the 2.2 upgrade we will have more control.
