so, i finally have joined the droid world. needless to say i have many, many questions. fortunately, this forum has answered numerous questions. thank yall for that. with that been said, i do have a problem:

i have searched and read posts concerning the gallery and the numerous folders associated with it. when i first looked into the gallery, i was just as confused as the next person due to the fact that it looked like the gallery was full of repeat items.

i read about trying to "clean up" the gallery, however, i am about as tech savy as a new born poodle.

i read about using ".nomedia" and creating a "file" and placing it into a "directory". TOTALLY CONFUSED.

i am looking to "clean up" my gallery so that i dont have all the folders, i.e. "all pictures", "camera pictures", "all videos", "camera videos", etc. i just want to be able to view the folders i create.

is it possible that someone could walk me through the process of the ".nomedia" step by step? just for information, i do have the Astro app.

i also just got the driod. it has so much **** i don't know where to start

Damn for a noob you're asking a pretty good question.

I'm calling you out as a ringer dag-nab-it! :)

So let's hear about this magical folder!

Oh, btw,... Welcome to the Droid world!!

Ok after a little research (thanks Google!) I found out the following;

If you place a file called .nomedia inside any folder it stops the music player from scanning inside that folder. One user claims it will also work for gallery so I am off to give it a go!

YES! I can confirm this works!

Here's how I did it using Astro file manager.

Open Astro
Find the folder you want Gallery to ignore.
Pick any file and long click it then select EDIT and COPY
Then in the toolbar up top, click EDIT and PASTE
It will ask you for a new file name
Call it "nomedia" without the period or it won't let you paste it
Once pasted, long click that file and select EDIT and RENAME
Add a "." to the beginning

Walla you are done and the folder will be ignored by Gallery.

I would think that once you create the magical .nomedia you can then copy and paste that file into other folders you want ignored.

Meanwhile, I found an alternate method. Rename the offending file in Astro with a . at the beginning. Example:

/sdcard/My Pics/.porn

Gallery will not pull up the .porn folder. The only thing that will is Astro, set to display hidden files/folders.
