Just bought a Droid off e-bay and am ready to start doing some stuff.

I have been reading about the updates available.
Do I get the 2.2 update directly from Verizon, or some other source?

After I update, I want to root the phone for tethering purposes. Is this a good thing to do, or should I buy a tethering program instead?

You get the update from Verizon. And I suggest you root the tether its easy and gives you access to your phone

Edit: Changed my mind. You can root and get the latest update by using this: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/74028-root-droid-1-regardless-os-version.html

It's probably the quickest and easiest way.
