ftp transfers

I just got my Droid and the wife's Eris set up (mostly) to connect/transfer files through FTP/wifi. Using Kubuntu 9.10, this seems to work ok other than the fact that after transferring files to/from the phones, the only way to get the SD card to see the new files is to reboot the phones?? Tried multiple steps and searches, is this really the only way to refresh the SD card?

I haven't tried ftp between droids, never have the problem with pc or mac ftps. Saw this earlier in another thread. SDMount from the marketplace, you won't have to reboot.
