The dual camera smartphone setup has become pretty popular over the past year. One of the first major devices to include the setup was the HTC One M8 and that camera got mixed reviews. Most of the negative reviews of the camera came from reviewers who got the phone early with preproduction software. Once the camera app was updated those reviews improved drastically. The big trick that a dual lens setup allows is the bokeh effect. This means with dual lenses you can make your images appear to have a greater depth of field.

This year has been the year of the dual camera. The Huawei P9 was one of the first with the Leica branded dual camera setup. Their setup allowed for greater depth of field, but it also did something unique. It took a normal image and a monochromatic image at the same time and used info from both images to process a sharper higher quality image. The iPhone 7 Plus features a dual lens setup as well as the LG G5, and the upcoming LG V20.

It looks like Samsung may be hopping on board with this fad as well. A few new trademarks filled for by Samsung suggest that they are creating a dual camera setup of their own. This is just in line with the timing for the Galaxy S8. I for one would be happy to see such a setup on the S8. How about you? Is the dual camera setup just a gimmick or is it actually worthwhile?
