Gallery: Old vs. New

I notice the Gallery app that comes with stock Froyo 2.2 (cooliris) doesn't cope too well (i.e. closes) if there are inconsistencies like:
Corrupt images/videos,
Thumbnail/cache not in sync with image directory,
etc.

How does the previous Gallery app (by Google?) compare? (Gallery3DMT.apk)

Correction...
com.cooliris.media (Gallery3DMT) is the older one.
com.motorola.gallery is the newer one (Android 2.2).
