Last night Geohot started a thread announcing that he would be releasing a root method for the Verizon Galaxy S5! The internet erupted! We have been waiting patiently on this for several months now. It was believed by some vuln experts that the S5 would not be exploitable at least not in a mass market way. Geohot had released proof of rooting his own device a few days ago, but had announced that he would "never release". I guess that $18,000 bounty had him back pedaling pretty quickly.

The method was released at 10:00 AM PCT. It is one of the easiest root methods ever created for a Samsung device. All you have to do is grab the towelroot apk, install it, and click the "make it rain" button. The phone will reboot and you will be rooted! This is said to work for pretty much every device whose kernel was developed before June 3rd which includes the Galaxy S5, S4 active, Note 3, Nexus 5 and a long list of other devices. If your device has not yet been rooted it might be a good idea to give this method a try. The thread is being updated pretty regularly with bug fixes to make this work on more and more devices and also to eliminate the devices that it will not work for. Head to the link below for the download and more information.

Totally awesome root method.

Geohot's gonna be Oprah rich. What was the bounty for the S5 root anyway?

im sure it doesn't use the same method, but its just like when we had Z4 i think.

actually, thats doubtful.
Jcase tweeted a while back, the reason he doesnt release most of the exploits that he finds is when he did, he only got about 20% of what was promised. the rest of the people reneged.

last i looked the bounty was close to 18k a couple weeks ago.

If this video shows it as easy as it is, then I'll be keeping a close eye on the happenings. I have questions, does it affect the KNOX, how will the next OTA mess with it and lastly how do you get back to stock?

If I end up using this root method, I can say hands down that it's the easiest of all the other phones I ever rooted: OG Droid, Droid 2, Thunderbolt and S3.

Those that reneged should be banned. These Devs work hard for all of us and should be rewarded.

This has not tripped knox for those who have used it, the next ota will patch it and you will lose root, if you need to get back to stock just unroot in the supersu app

Not just banned, IMO. Aside from an extreme unforseen hardship that would prevent one from keeping their pledge, anyone who reneges in situations like this deserves to experience every plague that has ever befallen mankind… all at once. Or, at the very least, to have their beloved devices disintegrate in their hands!

Have any new developments come out of this root method that are either good or adverse? The XDA thread exploded and hard to keep up with it all.

^this^ you might want to get that S5 rooted fast Vulcan. :) I imagine the devs will have a much harder time once a patch is pushed through with the next update.
