Definitely make sure that you've disabled SMS forwarding as well as SMS notifications. The toggles are not in the same location and people frequently seem to overlook one or the other.
Just did it. Its funny, when my daughter texted me my phone would have 2 alerts on it. That what made me check about where the other text alert was going. I gues it was going to my Verizon text as well as Google Voice. thanks for your help.
Just to be clear, to avoid sms charges when using google voice I should:
1. Under google voice settings > voicemail & text > voicemail notifications > send a text (sms) message to: (UNcheck cell phone)
But I can leave 'Email the message to: checked
2. On the same page, UNcheck forward text messages to my email.
I take it I can leave Transcribe Voicemails checked.
Are these the settings necessary to avoid sms charges using voice?
those settings are all about voicemail notifications, yes you should uncheck those as they will send you SMS transcriptions of your voicemail.
but make sure you also deselect the checkbox that i listed in my first post as well because that is what forwards SMS / TXT messages. Which is what your original message was about in the first place, your daughter sending SMS to your google voice number and you still getting them through VZW as well
I was getting charged for incoming texts only on my Droid X when using GV for texts. The fix was to go to GV settings and disable the synchronization. If it is synched, you get a text message on your phone that is charged by Verizon. If you select notification by email, you will receive an email notification which only goes to your data plan, which for Verizon is unlimited with the data plan.
