Gmail not in sync with desktop app: Able to send and receive pushed gmail emails

I am able to receive all my Gmail messages on my phone (RAZR MAXX) and also send emails with no problem (tried sending/receiving from an exchange account), but the Gmail web app is not synchronized with the Gmail inbox on my phone. For example, there are several emails i deleted on the phone, but still show up as unread on the desktop app. I have tried doing several manual syncs of gmail on the phone. Any ideas?
