Gmail required for Market + Sync?

Hi,
Just got my Eris-- Very nice so far, but there is some key functionality with my Mac I have to be sure works smoothly.

I'm probably the only one in the world asking this, but: Do I HAVE to have a Gmail address to access the Market and do any kind of sync? I DO have a Google account, but I only use a couple of features regularly. I don't use Gmail and just don't want it if I don't have to have it. Seems kind of odd you'd need an e-mail account to sync calendar, address book, etc.

Any insight?

That's how it works though, I'm afraid... It is, afterall, a Google product...

There are apps that can backup your contacts to the SD card, if that helps at all. Not sure if there's a calendar app that'll sync to anything else...

Yeah, I see...It would make more sense if a Google account and Gmail used the same credentials...Took me awhile to figure out what was happening. Thanks anyway.
