Google just released an update to the Gmail app. It adds some very useful functionality. In the notification pulldown you will be able to interact with the notification to Archive, Delete, or Reply to the message without having to actually open up the gmail app. Apparently this will only work if you have one message in your inbox so if you get tons of email this may not even be useful to you. Also included in the update are faster search results whether online or offline, and other bug fixes. You can grab the update now from the Play Store!

Not sure if others already found this out but you can change that Archive to Delete. I like this because I don't archive anything.

From your Gmail APP click the Menu button and go to Settings>General Settings>Swiping Conversation List. Change that to Always deletes conversations.

Now in that drop down you will have Delete and Reply. Hope this helps.
