Gmail update & system apps

Havent seen anything about this yet, but please let me know if there already is.

Since there was just an update to the gmail app, I tried to get it but kept running into an unsuccessful installation. I was thinking that removing it from the system apps list would let me do it, but I haven't been able to find where MIUI downloads normal apps in the directory (the place I'd be moving it to)

Anybody know a good fix for these system app update problems?

Using latest version of D1 btw.

all downloaded apps download to data/app

apps in system/app cannot update from the market, you can work around this by naming the apk in system app by adding a ".bak" minus quotations to the end of the file you want to update. You do this through an app like root explorer, make sure it is in Mount R/W and not Mount R/O, you will see the option to change this at the top of root explorer.

I really like the miui rom but had to flash a different rom due to having problems installing apps on the market

delete the gmail apk from your system folder using a file manager
go to settings > applications and clear data from market
relaunch market and it should download

Yeah, just go into /system/app, mount R/W, delete the .apk, reboot and then you can install. That clear date may work. I've never tried that so I wouldn't know but that would be much easier than rebooting.

Thanks!

I used Root Explorer, went to /system/app, renamed Gmail.apk to Gmail.apk.bak, rebooted, installed, went to Accounts & Sync and forced a sync of my Google stuff, and now it is working. Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction!

Just out of curiosity, why'd you rename it .bak?

if I am not mistaken, if you delete the apk you lose all data, but if you rename it with the .bak extension you save data and it allows it to update. Upon reboot the .bak will delete itself and you are just left with the updated app in data/app. I could be wrong but from what I have seen that is how it works.

What data would you lose? I did it and nothing changed. But I didn't know of this .bak way. Could prove useful later on. I wish devs just didn't include them in their ROMs. I kinda hate having to go in and delete, set permissions, etc. or whatever you have to do to update
