Going to India: How to disable APN and phone?

I'm going to India next month and I'm worried about getting a huge bill when I get back. I'd like to leave APN (which I think is phone data) and the actual phone disabled, but still do WiFi. I'd like it to be fairly fool-proof, in other words, I don't want a phone power-cycle to re-enable everything. My phone is rooted and I have utils like Quick Settings and JuiceDefender which I believe can do most of this. Any thoughts?

PS - I must confess that for all I know my Droid won't even get service in Germany (layover) or India, but I'd like to be sure.

If you go to settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks, do you have an option to disable data roaming?

That's so obvious I didn't even consider it. As a corollary I can disable phone roaming too.

I assume that India isn't served by Verizon or at least not the one I pay bills to.

Thanks!

Not sure about fun, it's for work. I leave Denver at about 1pm (leave my house around 10am) on Thursday and arrive in India at 12:15 am on Saturday. Having my Droid + SNES emulator will be a lifesaver.

India is dirty. Not the place for one with OCD or germaphobes. That is, unless you like piles of trash on the road and livestock wandering and deficating all over the city.

Wow, i use the snes emulater all the time. (its what i do in between classes.) And two days traveling, thats sucks... I can barely stand from pheonix to disney(La)..Denver to india i would be out of my mind. Hope you do well for your job in india. :lifting: Im sure its cake.

im a germaphobe.... nice description.. i think ill stick with the U.S. for now lol.

I'm more worried about keeping the Droid running to keep myself entertained, I am going to borrow a power adapter from a colleague and bring at least one extra battery.

And for the geography majors, it's Denver to O'Hare to Frankfort to Bangalore. Hopefully I can at least get a beer in Frankfort. In total that's 18 hours in the air.

Sorry for having gotten off topic.

You should be sure to pick up one of those universal power adapters/ amperage converters if you haven't already. I know they sell them at Target in the travel section next to the suitcases.
