Gonna root for the first time...

I have been doing a lot of searching around and reading post on how to root my Dinc 2. It seems like its fairly straight foward so I'm not too worried. But I hear a lot about bricking the phone during the process. I can't seem to find anything that explains what causes that. So my question to you fine folks is, what could brick my phone? And what are the things to avoid doing to prevent that? I'm completely green to the process and lingo so, if you could, use small words :) I'm currently on 2.3.4 so I also have to downgrade. Thanks for your help, you guys are awesome!

I haven't seen any bricked phones.
Just follow directions. Read the directions carefully. Download everything ahead of time.
First thing after gaining root: backup with Clockwork. This will ensure you always have a safe place to return to if you install a bad rom.
