Google Maps and Transit Directions

I noticed last night that Google Maps is not necessarily able to offer transit directions even if Google Maps on the web can. Is this something that will be updated over time?

It offers transit directions for me. In Google maps, go to menu, choose directions, then on the screen that pops up, you will have three icons on the bottom row. From left to right they are
A Car - For driving directions
A Bus - For transit directions
A person walking - for walking directions

Ok, let me correct myself. It worked for say, NYC, but for Washington DC it only showed bus transit not the Metro.
