Google Maps causing freeze, reboots on Droid 2

I've been having problems with Google Maps on my Droid 2 for several months now. At first the maps were just very slow to load, but now it has gotten to the point where it frequently freezes for several minutes, reboots, or just goes completely non-responsive with a black screen and requires me to remove the battery to reboot.

I tried uninstalling all updates and re-installing them from the Market, but that didn't fix the problem. I don't know how to uninstall it completely, or whether that would even help? At one point, Maps did work, so it hasn't always been buggy... but I can't track to when exactly the problem started.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any suggestions appreciated! I use Maps for a number of things and would like it to work. :/
