Google Maps Changes

Five of us recently had a Google Maps update without notice.
It changed the defaults.
The worst change was the change to Prefer fuel-efficient routes.
It added an hour to the trip from Charlotte to Silver Spring Maryland.

The change showed up on phones from 3 different providers.
And it was on iPhones and different Androids.
The phones were home based in Silver Spring, Charlotte and Boston.

The route and the alternative routes took mostly highways, not the freeways.
Removing that defaults brought the freeways back into play and estimated 35 minutes quicker going back to Charlotte.

I just checked Maps Settings and the Prefer Fuel Efficient slider was On. Im not sure if it was always on or happened with an app update.

When you say all 5 phones had a Maps update without notice, do you mean you didn't know the app was updating? If you have Play Store set to auto update apps you won't know when an app updates. That's why I turn that off and read each app update before manually clicking Update.

I have auto update off as well. It does not stop all updates.
The Prefer Fuel Efficient took the interstates off the solutions from here to Charlotte a trip my family and I take a lot.
Unchecking it put them back on.

I think the preferred fuel is supposed to be on by default since it says if the times are the same pick the fuel efficient

It's new and the times they consider to be the same can be an hour or more longer.
We, the group of us that noticed the change have been checking.
35 minutes later or longer the day we all noticed is not the same or good. :)

All of us had our settings changed without notice.

We all have been using a route we know and use to check.
