Google maps recording audio?

Can someone explain to me why the latest update to google maps added audio recorder rights? Is this now an app that can record audio without your knowledge or permission? Always been a Google fan, but starting to wonder.

But it always did that, from first version on my og droid. And it didn't record anything. Why is it suddenly recording audio? Where do audio files go? Taking up room on my phone?
