Google Navigation Night Mode

Running into a weird situation with Google Navigation. When I start it in the car dock, at night, it will not go into night mode. If I start it out of the dock it will go into night mode and stay that way when I drop it into the dock. If I close out and get back in, night mode stays (I'm sure because the process is still active). Has anyone else seen this?
