Google Talk data usage

Hi. I'm on a limited data plan, and had to turn off Latitude to save data use (as I heard it used A LOT). Does having myself always available on Talk use tons of data too? Or does it just use data when I actually send/receive texts. I'm on WIFI 90% of the day, but when I am out, I don't want to wasting my precious data! (I know i can set it to be "away" when the screen is off, does that save data the same as going offline?)

No, gtalk is a simple instant messenger, even if you were using it constantly I couldn't see it using much bandwidth.
