Google Talk not Working

When I first connected my phone to Gmail under the old OS, instant messages came through without me having to do anything. Now that I've done a factory reset to upgrade to Android 2.2 and connected to gmail, IMs are not coming through. They come through at the website, and my contacts and emails are all in sync. I don't see a setting to turn on for IMs.

I tried looking for an app in the Android Market, but the only Google Talk app I see in written in Japanese.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Update: I tried to have an IM conversation while I was offline (on the PC) and the IMs were placed in an email and sent to me (in email format). Still no IMs.
